Herefordshire Voluntary Action has provided a range of community development support in the South Wye area of Hereford City since 1998. We have developed strong relationships with Herefordshire Council and South Wye Regeneration Partnership.  We achieved notable successes as part of a 7 year regeneration funding programme, which was completed in April 2006.  During that period, 7 members of staff were working on a range of local projects involving:-

  • Consultation and engagement in regeneration structures

  • Establishment of 5 independent Community Associations

  • Co-ordination of community building including fundraising

  • Volunteering training programmes

  • Celebration events including co-organisation of Big Event

  • Youth project such as Newton Farm Skate Park and Youth Forum

  • Support to Newton Farm Information Centre

  • Delivery of Community based sports project

  • Administering 'Community Pride' small grants to local groups

Despite the end of the regeneration programme, HVA maintains a strong presence in the area. The following projects are ongoing: -

Community Sports Development Worker

This post facilitates free sporting activities in the local community for young people (aged 8-21). Qualified coaches and volunteers deliver a wide range of activities during term time, evenings and school holidays. Activities include fishing, canoeing, sailing, football, hockey, rounders, circuit training and many more traditional sports and outdoor activities.

Opportunities are also available for volunteers to get involved with the planning, organisation and delivery of activities. We provide regular training and sports leadership courses for both young people and volunteers to develop their skills and gain qualifications and awards.

Marlbrook Extended School Project

Our Co-ordinator works with Marlbrook School on the extended schools provision. The project started in April 2006 and is currently delivering both after school and holiday clubs. The programme has a strong community development element to ensure parents become involved in the extended school provision. The project runs through a partnership agreement which includes sports sessions that are run by the Active Community project worker, coaches and volunteers.
