New Chair for Herefordshire’s Third Sector Board

New Chair for Herefordshire’s Third Sector Board Jake Bharier has been appointed as Chair of the Third Sector Board for Herefordshire, which represents the many voluntary and community organisations in the county. Jake has worked for twenty years as a senior manager in the voluntary sector in the UK and internationally, and before that had worked as a corporate adviser for a multinational chemicals company. He moved to Herefordshire five years ago, and has been getting involved in local matters. He is currently an independent member of the Standards Committee of Herefordshire Council. He continues his involvement in international matters: he is involved with international networks of civil society (third sector) organisations which have been developing principles, both for the effectiveness of civil society around the world, and for the environment that governments, international organisations and donors should offer in order for people and communities to play an active role in their societies. And he is a Board member of two international charities. Herefordshire has a very rich network and long tradition of active voluntary and community organisations – from small community run societies, to large not-for-profit organisations delivering key services to local people. They are all part of what is known as ‘the Third Sector’ which is at the heart of the Big Society but more importantly our local community.” Jake says: “I’m honoured that people have asked me to represent the voluntary sector in Herefordshire. The opportunities and challenges for people here are much the same as those for the people I have worked with in, say, Lesotho or Nepal: homes, health, peace and supportive communities. I’m looking forward to working together with the community organisations and with Herefordshire Council to make this happen.” “These are exciting positions for anyone with passion for and commitment to the Third Sector. The Board will be speaking up on the key issues that affect voluntary and community organisations in Herefordshire. We will be promoting the role and contribution that local organisations make to the lives of people in the County and challenging both the sector and others to support and develop the work that they do.” One of his first tasks is to recruit more Board members. So if you are someone who can generate, develop and showcase new ideas to help people to come together in their neighborhoods to do good things, then The Third Sector Board for Herefordshire wants to hear from you.
